The Irish Volunteers were established in Dublin in November 1913. The founding of the force was in response to the establishment of the Ulster Volunteers which were opposed to home rule in Ireland.

The Irish Volunteers soon became organised throughout Ireland. During 1914 units were established in several towns and villages in Mayo. Colonel Maurice Moore of Moorehall was a chief organiser and instructor.

To commemorate the centenary Mayo County Library has on display in Castlebar Library material relating to many units of the volunteers in Mayo. The display will can be viewed by the public during library hours and runs until December 21st.
