The next meeting of the  Folklore of Mayo Society/ An Cumann le Bealoideas Mhaigheo.

On Friday 23rd March the society are hosting a lecture delivered by Sean Ó Duinn  of Glenstall Abbey. The lecture is entitled The Celts and the World Beyond, and will take place in the Knockranny House Hotel in Westport.

"The goddess Eire, who gives her name to the country, is the land of Ireland. She is the Great Mother who makes the grass grow, the corn ripen, who puts apples on the trees, fish in the rivers - the nourishing mother of her people"

This a quote from Sean Ó Duinn from his book Where the three Streams Meet:  Celtic Spirituality. Fr Ó Duinn is a monk in Glenstall Abbey and lectures in Irish Heritage Studies in Mary Immaculate Collage, Limerick. He is the next guest speaker of the Cumann le Bealoideas Mhaigheo / The Folklore of Mayo Society on Friday March 23rd.

The talk will take place at 8:30 pm in the Knockranny House Hotel in Westport, admission €5.

With the festival of Easter just around the corner, Fr Ó Duinn’s talk is timely, because it makes us start thinking of the festivals that we celebrate through the year. In Celtic times the four main festivals were Imbolc, Bealtine, Lunasa and Samhain. Corresponding to our Saint Bridget’s day, May day, The Harvest Feast and Halloween

Fr O Duinn talk will be an enlightening journey from the Celtic tradition to the Christian Tradition to our own time.

Following the lecture a session of traditional music will take place in the bar of the Knockranny House Hotel, supplied by members of the local Comhaltas branch.
