FETAC Level 5 Cultural and Heritage Studies

Mayo Folklore Local Training Initiative

Foxford, Co. Mayo

The Culture and Heritage Studies course is an opportunity to learn and train on site in the heart of a local community with a rich historical past.

The aim of the programme is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence in a range of compulsory disciplines in Irish Culture and Heritage studies, to work independently under supervision in a range of culture and heritage contexts and or to progress to further education and training. Learners on the course will achieve a FETAC level 5 Major Award in Culture and Heritage Studies on completion of the award requirements.

Modules include Folklore and Ethnology, Archaeology, Heritage, Irish Culture, Local History, Communications, Work Experience and Customer Service.

Our modules are aimed at educating learners in heritage and culture and practical research skills, while building on key workplace skills such as communications and customer service, which are highly sought after in all sectors. These skills are not just taught in the training room but are built on through practical experience, work placement and an innovative three month folklore research project. Work experience is gained during a two week placement in a museum, heritage site, tourist centre, arts centre or library.

Throughout the year we have guest lectures from museum and industry experts who provide advice about working in this area and gaining employment. Librarians, archeologists, folklorists, storytellers, crafters, professional and local historians will all contribute to our modules.

The main outcomes for the course are placement in employment or in further training or education e.g the BA programme in Heritage Studies at GMIT, Castlebar.

The course is 11 months full time, is aimed at unemployed people and eligibilty and training allowance is subject to Solas criteria.

The course start date is Monday 5th January 2015
