Special Olympics 2003-13 days to go!

There are just 13 days left until the Venezuelan delegation arrives in Castlebar. The delegation is 157 strong and consists of 111 athletes and 43 coaches and officials. The delegation will be arriving in Castlebar on the evening of Monday 16th June. They will be accommodated in Lough Lannagh Village and the Travellers Friend Hotel.

Castlebar Host Town committee are now putting the final touches to their programme of events and activities. The committee held a Volunteer Orientation Evening on Monday night in the Travellers Friend hotel and over 130 volunteers turned up to hear what they would be expected to do when the athletes arrive. Guest Speaker was Kitty Manager, Western Regional Manager, 2003 Special Olympics. She praised the people of Castlebar for the way in which they have whole-heartedly responded to the challenge of being a Host Town

The opening of the Art Exhibition Share the feeling…Paint the feeling! will take place on Friday 6th June at 8pm in Castlebar Library. The opening will be performed by Beverley Flynn T.D. The exhibition will run for the month of June and features work from adults and children with and without a learning disability. It shows what can be accomplished if the focus is on ability rather than disability. A CD entitled

Share the feeling…..sing the feeling will also be launched at this event. It celebrates the theme of Special Olympics and features Castlebar Gospel Choir and the Mayo County Choir. The CD will be available in local shops and record stores. All proceeds from the CD will go to local special Olympic clubs.
