The 'Scottish Play' - at the Royal Theatre Castlebar

Second Age Theatre Company presents a new and thrilling production of Macbeth, starring Aidan Kelly and Caitríona Ní Mhurchú as Macbeth and his Lady and directed by Alan Stanford. In Shakespeare’s most exciting play, blood is the theme and blood is the resolution. Macbeth is the bloodiest of all of Shakespeare’s plays and one of his most popular. It is a play of casual slaughter, where death is dealt out with consummate ease. It is a world where trust and truth and loyalty are cast aside in the lust for power, a world where everywhere, “There’s daggers in men’s smiles”

In this haunted, evil world of secret, black and midnight hags, who promise him the crown; Macbeth follows his fatal ambition, driven to the murder of the King by his most persuasive wife.

MorWax Productions presents a special two-hour version of King Lear at the TF which features all their artistic trademarks and dazzling style that has been such a huge hit with young audiences. Live music, a fast, visual style, with moments of mirth conjured from the text allows MorWax Productions to connect with audiences and bring Shakespeare alive.

When King Lear rejects his most devoted daughter Cordelia because she refuses to patronize him with hollow sentiments, he embarks on a journey of humiliation, loneliness and eventually madness. A story of family conflict ultimately reveals the bare futility of the human condition.

Director Paedar de Burca has had many triumphs with Shakespearian tragedy and has developed a style of playing that audiences find irresistible. In this version, Galway’s finest actors John Leyne, Brian O’Gibne, John Tuohy and John Regan as Lear give remarkable performances. As usual, legendary English playwright John Arden will give an introduction to the play and owing to demand, his notes will be available to students after the performance.
