Broadband boosts home internet use
By Abigail Waraker [22-11-2001]
Broadband internet users are turning off their televisions and using the internet more, according to research published by Fletcher Advisory.
When asked about changes in viewing habits since the installation of a broadband internet connection, 34 per cent of people with home broadband access said the internet is now replacing time previously spent watching TV.Broadband users have cut their television viewing by five hours a week on average.

The survey also revealed that 61 per cent of broadband users would rather have an internet connection than a television. This compares to just 19 per cent of narrowband users.

Broadband technology uses standard home phone lines to provide high-speed internet access up to 40 times faster than traditional dial-up internet. It offers an 'always on' internet connection at a flat monthly rate.

The survey showed that broadband users are starting to spend more time online at peak rate times because of the flat rate charges: 20 per cent of respondents said they had shifted their online use to the daytime.

Users now keep their computers on longer too, with 48 per cent of recipients leaving their PC switched on all the time because of the 'always-on' nature of the broadband connection
