US engineering firm Fort Wayne Metals is to invest E3.4m and create 80 jobs in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

The firm is setting up a European centre for the manufacture and distribution of its precision-wire products for the medical industry. The project is part financed by IDA Ireland.

Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Harney said, "The company is currently focusing its growth strategy on the European market and this new Irish operation will be an integral part of that strategy."

The Tanaiste added, "This is a very important investment for both the medical devices industry here and for Co Mayo, not least because of the employment setbacks suffered by the county in recent months." Fort Wayne Metals will be the first tenant at the new IDA Business & Technology Park in Castlebar. Fort Wayne's chief executive officer Scott Glaze said the company chose to locate in Ireland because of its increased activity in Europe and its expansion plans for this year. "IDA Ireland provided us with all the right reasons as to why Ireland would be the best European location for this investment," he said.
