No wonder there were environmental concerns if the administration was 'developing' 1000 square miles within 550 square miles. Sounds like bad maths on the part of the administration!
Replace the word 'develop' with pollute, destroy, chop down trees, over-fertilise, lay waste, make toxic, concrete over, cause erosion, obliterate, consume, contaminate, radiate, extinguish (as in rare species).
Ask people within 500 mile radius of Cernobyl what they think about 'development' on the less than one square mile where the power station stood! Did you know that 1000s and 1000s of women had abortions all over Eastern Europe following Cernobyl? I met a man who with his wife was brought around a cancer hospital to show them what might happen to their unborn child in the aftermath following Cernobyl - they were one couple in 1000s in just one Eastern European country. It may not have hit the press stateside but it happened nevertheless.
Environmentalists warned for years in the 1970s about the dangers of nuclear power - even near misses like Three Mile Island didn't slow things that much. Nobody paid any heed until Cernobyl. But I guess they were 'commie' abortions so maybe they don't count! Just like gassings and lethal injections for 'bad' people I guess.
