My Bad maths I guess - but the point remains - Cernobyl only covered small footprint but devasted thousands of square miles - you can pick up its radioactivity in any lake on the planet - literally - almost as strong a signal as from the atmospheric testing in the 50s and 60s. The facilities that leached out hexavalent chromium in the now famus Erin Brockavich case only covered a few thousand square metres perhaps but that was little consolation to the people affected. (Interesting that the company is now bust). Ditto Love Canal, ditto the paper case in Canada - the local Indians suffered tunnel blindness - Minamata - just one small facility leaking mercury into the bay. There are hundreds of environmental disasters. Size has nothing to do with it. But of course there is the incremental habitat destruction - piecemeal building of houses, factories, strip malls across the landscape - a landscape that other species besides ourselves depend on. Here in Ireland our one dead river (The Avoca) is affected by what could be considered a very small mine which is closed for almost 100 years - but the river is still dead. No wonder environmental protestors get excited about just a small 'research' facility. No indication as to what the 'research' was?
