Having immigrated to both countries I would say that the US policy is just as restrictive and certainly more complicated and more expensive.

Both have a degree of racism in them but it should also be noted that both are ageist and tend to favour people who already have relatives in the country.

Certainly I felt a little bit targeted when recently I had to sign an INS form because I was a male between the ages of 25-40, my wife who is of a similar age did not have to fill in the same form because the INS believe women can't be terrorists. ho! ho!
