"Barry built a castle but it's no longer there even though the town is still called after Barrys castle." There is another theory on the origins of the name of our town. There is an Irish word similar to Barraigh which translates to bog in English. There used to be a bog in the McHale Park - Railway Station - Volex area. And surely enough there are reports that a castle once existed in the area. Caislean an Bharraigh - Castle of the Bog. Irish teacher told me that in Secondary school. Obviously nobody wants anything got to do with a bog in their town name so we'll stick to the first version.
