You are right all the way Celia, i put some comments futher down the thread, i worked in the same scale as the WHB employee in Uk for 24yrs with unbroken service as well, i was told when i joined the hospital in 1973, that because of the demanding nature of the work involved that they had in place an excellent pension scheme to reward their employees and protect them in case of retirement and illness, we contributed through our pay each month a reasonable amount, so when i retired after 24yrs service in 1989 i recieved a lump sum of £40.00 thosand tax free, and a pension of £600.00 per month linked to cost of living, a year later an additional amount of £288.00 was added per month taking pension per month £888.00 per month this was based on final salary also you can nominate a member of your family to go on recieving part of this pension after death, i know because of size of work force ect between Uk and Eire there could be a difference, but i am sure if health boards took care of there most valuable assests their staff the service would improve no end, i did not know till 4 weeks ago how appalling the conditions were in the hospitals here, i had to visit someone late at late at a hospital in Galway and what i saw was appalling people sleeping on corridors not one but every corridor, people being sent home at 2am after waiting all day to get attention becasuse their was no doctors avaiable to treat them, and staff who were very over worked, with no support, my God we would be appalled at these conditions in a third world country! but i suppose building useless spires and stadiums and Goverment jets is far more important, but you know the most frigtening thing was that people who were waiting for treatment never complained they said this was normal in what year are we in 2003? shame on the overnment and health bord managers who draw their big fat salarys every week
