The reports are that the Volex building will remain open to handle purchasing for the Volex group throughout Europe, this will keep about 70 jobs (so I've heard, dunno how accurate that is!)
Baxter does seem to be doing quite well and have taken on more staff recently.

To answer your question re politicians, Castlebar has lost over 1,000 jobs in the last 12-14 months which no matter what way you look at it is a staggering figure for any one town the size of Castlebar. Our politicians rather than being like a dog with a bone over this have barely uttered a peep. My two cents is that were the economy better managed during the boom by our politicians we would be better set up for this down turn, however they allowed inflation to run rampant, they promise us consumer prices would not increase in the euro changover and anyone abusing this would be prosecuted, yet they did NOTHING to curb the situation as prices sky rocketed, thus driving up peoples salary needs thus making us uncompetitive thus losing us jobs.
Now we have the great Mary Harney telling us that we need to be more competitive and have to accept less in our career development. Thanks Mary, you and your cohorts f*ck it up and we pay once again!
Anyhoo, rant over, to answer your question more simply curious, they ain't doing jack!!!
