The Liberian city has been without power since 1992 when faction fighters destroyed the hydro-electric plant which used to provide power to Monrovia. Those who can afford it have generators. The others do without electricity. Some 250,000 people are living rough in appalling conditions in the capital, Monrovia and doctors are struggling to treat an ever-growing number of casualties. Over 250,000 people have died during this decade long civil war. Now, 11 years later,it has finally become a minor issue (distraction) with the first world countries. No disrespect to anyone, just pointing out the irony of it all. The blackout of 2003 is the huge news, however, Liberia's plight and that of millions of of others in the third world, isn't even a blip in the American media.
