Seriously though, that relationship is almost certainly over once he goes. Living and travelling in Oz for a year can change a person, and the girlfriend may not have taking so kindly to him leaving in the first place. A year is a long time, maybe he'll find a girl in Oz to marry, have kids, nice house, white picket fence....
