We are talking about flatfish - i.e. flat fish that live in the sea and are animals not plants! The traditional plant breeder would have been at it quite a long time before s/he managed to cross one strawberry variety with another that just happened to have a flatfish gene in it. Unless of course a flatfish fell from the air - you know just like the Ballina salmon this week that broke a roof tile on the house by the Moy as it fell from the grasp of an Osprey or a practical joker - the flatfish falls on strawberry plant and hey presto by virtue of the force of the fall - alchemy happens and the genes are transferred?
