Another sheep-farming area that has serious problems with overgrazing is the Shetlands. It's an interesting coincidence that the same weather system caused similar damage there too last Friday! From the Shetland Times:

"Local farmer Jacky Henderson said he was devastated as the flood had damaged his land, fencing and agricultural buildings.

He said: “The first time that I was aware of something was at six in the morning when I heard this rain. I got out looking at the cattle at the back of seven and I couldn’t get home again, as the whole hill here was coming down the burn.

“Everything is flooded, the fences are all gone and we don’t have fences anymore to keep stock in.

“I can’t really explain how I feel. I don’t know what to do and where to turn. There are hundreds of sheep around here, the cattle is out and there are no fences. At the present moment, I don’t know whether I am coming or going. I feel devastated. The grazing is blackened with hill moor – I have never seen the like.”

He and other farmers and crofters in the area lost many sheep that were grazing in the hills."
