You're absolutely right, as was your Da. As an American I always make sure I am not staying in a house and or hotel with other Americans from the United States. And that ,especially in Italy. When I stay in Ireland I stay with family, so there's no problem. And truthfully, I have never been or acted as the "Ugly American." But have had New Yorkers disgrace me, and in all places - the Vatican.
I did have to tell a Frenchman flying out of Ireland to Holland five years ago, after he insulted my country (U.S.) that if it were not for the United States he'd be walking the 'goose step,' but that was the only negative encounter I've ever had from a European in many trips overseas. And by the looks of his fellow tourist in the group I said the right thing - he must have been an 'ugly Frenchman,' no? Slan
