One individuals name is practically a byword for sectarian bigotry. The majority of his postings are by any standard offensive in one way or another. Another gentleman can hardly go a week without posting something inappropriate. In his early days on the BB people were prepared to give him a chance in the hope that he would cop himself on and grow up but he has gone from bad to worse. He has been given "final warnings" on several occasions but usually either ignores them or responds with a scant apology only to reoffend within a matter of days. The incident last week where he literally drove a newcomer off the board was the final straw as far as I (and several others) was concerned. On that occasion he receives yet another "final warning" and responds not only by being unapologetic but downright cheeky about it. Several other people only seem to be interested in using the BB for personal conversations amongst themselves, usually on the subject of "how-drunk-we-got-last-weekend" and "How-drunk-were-going-to-get-tonight". What Interest or appeal these "chat threads" are supposed to have to the wider public is beyond me. There are usually several threads of this mindless banality per day now and they have the effect of flooding the board so that "proper" postings just get pushed down the board and lost in the flood of banality. Now nobody is suggesting that the BB be turned into a discussion on the merits of Shakespeare, or International Monetary Fund policies on bilateral trade or suchlike but would simply like to see a return to the days when there was something on the BB which just might be of interest to the general public. If someone unintentionally steps over the line and has a posting deleted that’s fair enough but its high time that the people who are consistently dragging the BB into the gutter were told in no uncertain terms that they are not wanted here. People can dismiss me as disgruntled whinger if they want but given that 1) I seem to have some support Quite a few people seem to agree with at least some of what I’m saying. I don’t want this to be seen as attack on M, M1 or the rest of the CIAT staff. As I’ve said before Its through their hard work and dedication that Castlebar has undoubtedly the best and most successful community website in Ireland but If a small number of people are going to continue doing their damndest to give the site a bad name what is all this effort going to amount to at the end of the day?
