I don't think it would have been much different. US Foreign Policy has been remarkably consistent from administration to administration over the past 50 years or so. Witness Clinton's activities in the Sudan and Kosovo, Bush senior in Iraq, Reagan in Iran, Afghanistan, Central America etc. etc. One thing that has struck me about those of you who have accused me of 'USA bashing' is that you have a remarkably US-centric view of the world. I see this again in your Bush V Gore question, as if it amounts to a hill of beans in the real scheme of things, also in the often hysterical reactions of others who suggest that concerns for starving Afghans and calls for restraint is to be somehow anti-USA. (Not to mention the constant attempts to shoot the messenger rather than argue the case). I like your phrase in the post below "mass emigration". A nice bit of euphemistic doublespeak to gloss over the ugly reality of what is happening in Afghanistan. By your own logic, the people of Afghanistan are being starved in order to destabilise the Taliban government. Is that not another form of terrorism? I wish I could share your optimism that bombs will not be dropped. I pray that this will be the case but I am not too optimistic especially given Blair's speech yesterday and the continued lack of co-operation from the Taliban (not that I expected anything else, from either).
