I seem to recall a poll a while ago that
suggested there wasn't much enthusiasm
for a referendum. I think the same poll
indicated a majority (between 60% and 70%)
in favour of abortion in limited circumstances
(the current situation I think).

Similiar to you I am not interested in discussing
personal views on abortion but I am interested
in the political motivation of the government
for bringing the issue up at this time.

The economy is hitting a rough patch, an election is
looming, TDs are getting a little uncomfortable
especially independents I imagine, so perhaps this
is a little distraction to try and polarise the
electorate a little.
