New York is on a high state of alert after the crash. Four residential buildings are on fire and all bridges into and out of the city are closed. The plume of smoke from the burning buildings can be seen against the New York skyline. Mayor Rudy Giuliani in a statement said that it appears that the right hand engine fell off the aircraft after encountering difficulties shortly after a late take-off from JFK. An eyewitness who initially thought the plane was a concorde narrowly escaped being seriously injured when parts of the engine struck the hood of a nearby car. At this time the crash seems to be an accident and there are no reports of the downing being associated with the work of terrorism.
