Because the term radiator is a misnomer for these objects. In fact relatively little heat is radiated from your radiator. Most of the heat felt from a "radiator" is due to the fact that the heat rises from the top of the radiator and causes convection currents which circulate the heat throughout the room. They should more properly have been called "convectors"
