I wanted a dog, my partner wanted a dog and....we ended up getting a cat! The reason for this is that if we got a dog, we would only be there in the evenings for him (or her) and because we live in the countryside, he'd have had to stay chained up for fear of sheep worrying. Puppies demand a lot of attention and it wouldn't be fair to leave him tied up all day. Whereas a cat is more independent, they can be let out all day and snuggle up with you in the evening. You will have to make a decision which is fair to the dog and be sure that you won't get bored of the walks, cleaning etc.
