Hi,
I'm an American with some roots in the castlebar area. Recently I've taken up learning Irish with the help of many great learners sites I've found on the net.

I was surprised to hear that only a few Irish people still speak the language, I thought it was spoken by just about everybody outide of Dublin. Why did the Irish give up their beautiful language and why don't they try to make it their national language again, now that Ireland is (mostly) a free country?
