I use to hate flying as well, and even knowing all the statistics flying is far safer than driving , those things never helped me, I too would become numb with alcohol & like Celia , alcohol numbed me but not the fear. Some things I learned to help cope, to smell something like purfume that I liked and that helps to take your thoughts to a happier place, also for me it was a control issue , so I would take a jouranl to write in and on the plane start wrting all the things in my life I felt out of control with , confortation with people what ever, I would write the things I felt sad about in my life, then I would write down solutions as well as write down my hopes and dreams and goals in life , and get excited about these things, and with a particular bump or noise , I would write "I AM IN FULL CONTROL OF ME , I WILL HANDLE ANYTHING THAT LIFE THROWS ME. I WILL SUCCEED" ! and then I would write affirmations, at different times other passengers would ask me "are you a writer"? I can't say this completely took all the fear away but it helped , and for me my fear was irrational in that I drive all the time, and my fear for me boiled down to all the areas I felt out of control, less than . So I needed to empower myself in some way. Now I rather like to fly and find it restful , peaceful, and so high up in clouds , how great is that ? Good luck to you to overcome this fear , flying truly is a wonderful way to travel. Oh my usual before I started this I would have to be poured onto the plane, then scotch and water all the way. Then when I stared journaling, bloody mary's or mimosas, then victory , if a morning flight I could actulay drink a cup of coffee , get cozy and start writng , you can do this !
