The old line runs from Sligo through Claremorris to Athenry and then on to Ennis. The trouble with this line is that it crosses the N17 between Claremorris and Tuam (Main Sligo to Galway road) 5 times making this stretch of track uneconomic to use. A new line would have to be built at enormous expense not only because of construction costs but also, land would have to be purchased for the new line. I agree it would make sense to have a light rail link between Sligo and Galway. It would certainly ease the pressure on the N17 which is choked with traffic. There is certainly a demand for it as any student will tell you. I'm afraid its the same old story in this country, all roads lead to Dublin.
