The over-representation of certin professions such as auctioneers on local authorities has generated a lot of discussion here in recent months.

Im just wondering has this issue been raised much in the local media generally ?

While the fact that an auctioneer decided to put him/herself foward for an election doesnt in itself automatically imply (as some suggest) any improper motive/self interet on the part of the candidate it does seem extrordinary that a profession which less than 1% of the electorate would be a member of is so heavily over represented on local authorities arond the country.

Incidently we shouldnt single out Auctioneers for scrutiny either. Other professions seem to be rather overrepresented in the field of politics too. Soliciters/Lawyewrs being a good example
A lot of people maintain that our laws are written by lawyers for the benefit of lawyers and indeed this is not an exclusivly Irish phenomonen either
