Faith is more than a personal thing. Look around you now( suicide bombers etc,) look back a bit too: martyrs, the Reformation, the Holocaust; the whole history of Ireland! and see that it has been a cultural thing from the start.Martin Luther, at the Reformation-tried to make it a matter of individual conscience: a personal thing, but this didn't really take off. We only imagine it can be a personal thing these days because we consider ourselves to be individualists ( there's no such thing as society, as Maggie Thathcher said) and we don't understand what religion really means. That's why the Muslim Fundamentalists are going to have the last word- unless we get our act together
