The electoral authorities (Mayo county council and the Dept of the Enviornment) have a lot of questions to answer too Why should anyone (especially political parties like FF or even the Shinners) have access to everyones address details ? Its not just the parties though. Anyone can walk into the reference section of Castlebar library and look up the register without anyone challenging them as to why they want the information. They can even take notes and photocopies if they do wish and now of course its on the net as well So who would benefit from having our details and why should be worried Well imagine a wife-batterer whose spouse has run off in fear of her life and he wants to track her down Or a violent criminal about whom someone has given information to the police and they need some help tracking them down and have their name but not their address. ? And lets say the electoral office in Northern Ireland were as careless with peoples personal data there would be certain individuals scanning the list looking for evendence of "themmuns in our urreaa" (The currently infamous Whitehall Square apartments in Sandy Row for example) which could have all manner of dangerous consequences. In Ireland of course people concernd about their privicy or even security (only members of the Police and certain ranks of the defence forces currently have the option of having their names witheld an option that should be available to everyone) have the option of not registering to vote Which I suspect suits the likes of Fianna Fail very nicely As for Luddites you have probably noticed that the website doesnt even work properly when its working at all it is delivering incomplete and inaccurate results (I know because Ive been trying to do searches on certain prominent local FF members) which is no surprise given that we are talking about the people who have made a total mess of PULSE, electronic voting, Digital TV/radio and the provision of proper broadband and telecommunications services in Ireland
