A lot of civilians did die in airraids where there was no obvious military justification for having them particularly in cities like Dresden and Hamburg and later in Nagasaki, Hiroshima and the dozens of Japaneese cities subjected to intensive "conventionsl" bombing (which in many cases resulted in more destruction/casualties than experienced in Hiroshima)

The main purpose of such raids was arguably not so much the destruction of the Axis war machine as to warn the Russians what they faced if they were to attempt to continue/resume the Westward push in Europe after Germany had been defeated
