Most EU states have restrictions on citizenship similiar to the ones we are introducing.

I think the reasoning has something to do with the fact that most of these countries are former colonialists and they didn't want the colonised peoples coming back to the mother country. They wanted the colonisation to only go in one direction.

The US does not have these restrictions. If you are born in the US then you are automatically a citizen.

If the Irish remembered their history then they would know that they were more colonised than colonisers and might have had more sympathy for those in a similiar plight.

Of course one of the characteristics of post colonial societies is that they tend to copy the values of their former masters.
