We do run php - that's no problem. We have recently set up a fully fledged blog system - moveable type and mysql based - which is up and running with the latest features, RSS, etc. - if anyone is interested in writing a regular blog. We will announce this more formally in a week or so but it's testing well at present.
We have tried splitting off different topics before but they have usually died a death. the only really successful one is the Nostalgia Board.
We are very wary about dropping below the critical mass necessary to keep a lively BB going. The polls topic one works fine but is a bit quiet and there is still more discussion about poll topics on the main BB than on the dedicated one. There are thousands of BBs out there where the last post was a month or a year ago. If a day went by without a post here it would be time to pack it up.
We are also working on a revamp of our photo gallery which will allow threads in the linear BB (which was written by Mark Waters) to be posted relating specifically to individual photos.
There's no technical problem in setting up any number of different systems php, sql, cgi, perl whatever we have the technology as they used to say in the million dollar man but the bottleneck is the quantity and quality of the contributions.
Castlebar is a small town but the million+ pages read here every month are a phenomenon in their own right so we are doing something right.
All help - e.g. in writing REGULAR blogs or contributing material on a monthly/weekly/daily basis to Castlebar.News is always welcome.
