Something which has proved very successful in Australia (and would also work here in Ireland) was the introduction of “passing lanes” Which work as follows; on a normal road (i.e. one lane of traffic going in each direction) every 10 kilometres or so the road splits into 3 lanes and one of the lanes of traffic gets to use the extra lane on the road to pass slower traffic, the road (after 1 -3 kilometre’s are so) then returns to 2 lanes again, when you come to the next passing lane (3 lanes of traffic)the traffic coming in the other direction then gets a turn to use the passing lane. Its simple and works a treat! It cuts out taking risks, not as many cars overtaking on dangerous stretches because they know they will get an opportunity to pass safely when they reach the passing lane, it would be ideal to have a few of them on the Castlebar to Westport road... N.B. the distance of and between the passing lanes vary to each road.
