The department lays down the number of days children need to be in school and this day "lost" will be regained either by having a shorter mid term break, christmas break etc.

I use the inverted commas around lost, because despite losing, children have to be shown the pride and respect that comes from competing in sports. Education is not all about learning from books but an education in life.
