I have come to the conclusion that you are not a Castlebar person Mogli! WE DO pronounce "th" around here (and we are not in the anglicised East!)and there IS a "th" sound in the Irish as we pronounce it around here. Tá, for example is pronounced rather like "thaw" not "taw". Most people I know who do not have a "th" in their pronounciation are either from the South (sowt) or parts of Leinster (including parts of Dublin). Natives of Mayo (and Connacht) never have pronunciations such as "tink" (for "think") or "dat" for "that" - but we have a Taoiseach who uses these pronunciations all the time.
