Is today the day our county councillors decide the route of the N5 between Ballyvary and Bohola?

Without casting any aspersions on county councillors who are also auctioneers, (eleven or twelve depending on which way the wind blows), how can voters expect an objective decision on such a crucial infrastructural and environmentally sensitive issue when there are so many obscure vested interests floating about?

Is it not time for auctioneers to be banned from elected office, for when you look at some of the horrendous-looking dwellings thrown up in recent years along the highly visible N5 route on account of political lobbying (and weak planning) surely we are getting to the stage where drastic steps are needed if future generations arent going to find themselves living in a poisonous brave new wasteland, where septic tanks and wind turbines and endless vistas of grim bungalows rule and kids wonder where their forebears and elected representatives were when the disaster unfolded.

Local elections next June will be critical; it could be stick or twist, in other words Mayo to plough on the way its going

-or shudder, and do a fast U-turn.
