The german national anthem was a battle hymn written in the late nineteenth century, and upon its adoption as the National Anthem, the nazis exploited it to rustle up support. The phrase "Deutchland Uber Alles", the song's opening line, is today synonymous with Nazi Germany of the 1940's. They don't even sing the first couple of verses anymore, because of some of the lyrics (where they sing about lands that no longer belong to Germany) no longer apply, and because of the stigma attached to the song.
