you are right Fortycoats it is 40days from ash Wednesday till Maundy Thursday, in the Orthodox Catholic Church of which i am a priest we fast from meat dairy products throughout the whole forty days, fastings in the respect that any money saved must be given to charity, with it comes the the advice that if you cannot fast at least you should go out of your way to do something to help someone else but not to make a big fuss about it, i suppose a bit of fasting might reduce some of our waistlines a bit
