i think if it wasn't a mandatory subject in schools, people wouldn't be forced into it, and therefore wouldn't resent it. students of irish would have chosen to do it off their own bat, and would be more enthusiastic for it. (besides from being held back by mugs like me at the back of the class who didn't want to be there). the subjects i preferred were the ones i chose, not the ones i was pushed into doing.

and the standard of teaching of irish is terrible. they'll let anyone with a cupla focail teach it, and there's very poor regulation. the course itself sucks (peig?)

i've been studying french since first year of secondary, and irish since i was five. i can't rub two words as gaeilge together, but my spoken french is actually passable. tells you something.

oh, and compared to a modern language, it simply doesn't give you the career options. sad but true, and something young people have to take into account when deciding subjects for college etc.
