Of course you are absolutely correct and the preferential treatment is so good that a full 5% of Travellers live to be 50 years old and an absolutely massive 2% of Travellers live to be 65. We can be very proud of the preferential treatment that we mete out.
We have a third world community living in our midst and we hate them so much. We hate them with a ferocity that the KKK boys would sit back and admire and praise. Replace black with Traveller and shift back to the 1950s deep south America and your in the territory of some of the comments on this thread.
The Celtic Tiger has come and gone and we couldn't even provide the most basic of facilities for a mere 25,000 people - water electricity a sample survey of a over 600 families in Dublin found that:
36% had no flush toilets
And then we expect them to behave themselves!
Having said that the Castlebar halting site is unusual perhaps in that it's actually there at all!
While it is a legal requirement for councils to house the homeless not many county councillors take this particular bit of legislation very seriously. But then with 80% illiteracy among travellers not many of them vote I suspect so they don't really get much of a hearing from councillors across the country.
