Because they live in Third World conditions perhpaps? From a citizens information website - a bit out of date but shocking for 1987: Infant mortality rate is 18.1% per 1000 live births while the national figure is 7.4% Travellers have more than twice the national rate of still-births. Traveller men live on average ten years less than settled men. Traveller women live on average 12 years less than their settled peers. Travellers are only now reaching the life expectancy that settled Irish people reached in the 1940's Male Travellers have over twice the risk of dying in a given year than settled males, whereas for female Travellers the risk is more than threefold. Travellers have higher death rates for all causes but their rates are significantly higher for * accidents, * metabolic disorders in 0-14 age group, * respiratory ailments, * congenital problems.
