According to the CSO Castlebar and Environs had a population of 8500 or so in 1996 and is something like the 30th largest town in the country whereas Kilkenny + env was over twice the size with 18696 people.

It's interesting though that the CSO don't list Kilkenny as a city - royal charter or not our republican CSO don't recognise some ancient King's wish.
