I think your comment about 'With proper roads/rail links' reveals what we know about Knock. Its too far from any major city to be regarded as a good location. As we know Shannon has similar problems, which is why they are so bothered about the likely ending of the stopover.

A proper airport at Galway would be the end of both of them. That's why Galway is kept on a site that doesn't allow the runway to be extended to take jets.
