I must tell Mike my son about that. He is a bee keeper. He has a 100 hives. I really thought that you would need a touch of bleach and then stain to the color, you wanted. In wood shop we sanded, put on wood filler stain, and them salack to seal the wood. After that we put on varnish, rubed powdered pummis (volcanisk ash with an erisher) and then varnished again, and rubed again to get 3 coats of varnish. It was walnut. It looked good. Today there are better products then varnish I think and a lot less work. Good luck with it. I did that 50 years ago in the 2nd year of high school.
