There was talk of diverting traffic from main street towards Hobans car park (back of Hynes shoes) and pedestrianising from there up to Parsons corner, no progress yet. I think it should be priority to boost the main street area and down towards linenhall st. which is fading fast on the retail front since the "new" part of town was established (Argos, Tesco etc.) Whatever about the translucent material (wont last five minutes with the gurriers in this place) but the benches and trees sound like exactly what the place needs.
