I think the answer is a definitive NO. As a Roman Catholic who attends church regularly I don't see the need for a national day of mourning.
Faith is a personal thing and as such we don't need a day of mourning to mark the passing of The Holy Father. Everyone who wants to make the effort to attend services have the ability to do so and don't need a day of mourning to do this.

How many of the people who requested a day of mourning attended services last weekend to pray for the pontiff.

The answer should be definitely no.
