What you need is some "wave (sound) recording software" (like Cool Edit) and some CD burning software (like Nero) and a cable to connect the outputs on your stereo system to the line input on your soundcard

The most common type of cable is one with two RCA phono plugs on one end and a 3.5mm stereo jack plug on the other

You use the recording software to create .WAV files which you can then burn onto CD's or convert to .MP3 format and copy onto your portable player

For car use CD's are probably the handiest
