This is a seismic shift within the industry and I for one am delighted to see Apple taking this route.

The X86 chipset has economies of scale that Motorola & IBM cannot compete with and for too long Apple was a closed shop but finally they've an O/S based on UNIX and they're going to be producing hardware based around an X86 chipset and that's a great leap forward for developers and h/w modders.

As a footnote, I don't think that Dell will be too worried, Dell will continue to sell cheap PCs (and other JIT manufactured items) so I guess they won't be worrying too much, sure who knows they might even start to sell PC's for Apple !
