The 'farms' within a mile of the town are used mainly for grazing beef and sheep and for obtaining outline planning permission. How many keep animals in sheds overwinter building up large quantities of slurry? None? In most cases the animals are sold off before the winter. It's highly unlikely too that there are any dairy farms with winter housing and slurry storage that requires subsequent slurry spreading. The slurry that we are smelling on a regular basis mainly comes from an industrial unit that is at least five miles from the town.(It can't be called a farm in the normal sense). The stuff is tankered and spread anywhere and everywhere that they can get land to take it. So basically the slurry has nothing to do with the farms within a mile of town - it has to do with industrial-scale units where pigs are kept in pens and never see the light of day.
